Eight hours in Barcelona may be far too little to see the city in full, but a cruise passenger can still experience its architecture, food and neighbourhoods without turning the visit into a frantic race between landmarks. The key is to abandon any attempt to complete a checklist. La Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, Casa Batlló, the Picasso Museum, the Gothic Quarter, Las Ramblas, Barceloneta and Montjuïc are all possible in theory, but trying to fit them into one day would leave little time to enjoy any of them. A more rewarding plan begins with choosing what matters most. Visitors should…

An experimental drug has dramatically increased one woman’s ability to tolerate sunlight after years of living with erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP), a rare disorder often described as an allergy to the sun. Emily Pearson, from Minneapolis, has since run two marathons and spent a week outdoors without the severe pain that once followed even brief exposure. Pearson was eight when her symptoms began. Within minutes of being outside, her hands and feet would become intensely painful, feeling as though they were “in a hot oven” while being pricked with “pins and needles”. The pain could last for days. Her family spent…

Green Party deputy leader Mothin Ali has rejected Suella Braverman’s claim that people of Asian heritage cannot describe themselves as English, declaring that he is “as English as a Yorkshire cup of tea”. Mr Ali, a Leeds councillor of Bangladeshi descent, addressed party activists at the Greens’ conference in Brighton after the Reform UK MP said she considered herself “British of Asian ethnicity” rather than English. “A message to Suella, I’m brown, I’m Muslim. But I’m as English as a Yorkshire cup of tea!” he told the gathering. Activists booed when Mrs Braverman was mentioned. The former home secretary made…

Republicans are urging Donald Trump’s political network to increase spending in the Texas Senate race, amid growing concern that Ken Paxton may not be able to withstand a late surge by Democratic nominee James Talarico. Senior congressional Republicans and party officials have privately pressed the president’s team to commit more money before the final weeks of the campaign. Their concern has intensified as the race has tightened and Democrats have begun investing heavily after months of holding back. MAGA Inc. and affiliated groups are expected to spend about $45 million on television, digital advertising and direct mail in Texas through…

Christa Pike refused her last meal and asked for the $20 set aside for it to be used to buy pizza for homeless people, shortly before two lethal injections failed to execute her. Pike had been offered the chance to choose a final meal but instead requested that the money be redirected. The request was for the food to be given to homeless people. Her execution in Tennessee did not proceed as planned. After receiving two lethal injections, Pike complained of pain in her arm before becoming unconscious and beginning to snore. She was taken to a local hospital, where…

Orlando is facing a muggy weekend of scattered thunderstorms before a stalled front brings a much wetter spell to Central Florida from Monday, with heavy rain and localised flooding possible. Showers and storms are most likely during the afternoon and evening on Saturday and Sunday, particularly between about 2pm and 10pm. The heaviest activity is expected to develop west and south-west of Orlando, although forecasters said neither day should be a complete washout. Temperatures are expected to reach the upper 80s Fahrenheit inland on Saturday, with slightly cooler conditions along the coast. Sunday will be hotter, with inland highs reaching…

An eight-hour Barcelona itinerary for cruise passengers should focus on a small number of experiences rather than attempting to cover the entire city, according to a proposed day plan centred on La Sagrada Familia, neighbourhood exploration and a long lunch. The limited time available after a ship docks can make the city’s most famous sights seem impossible to fit in. Barcelona offers Gaudí architecture, museums, historic districts, markets, beaches and mountain views, but trying to visit them all would leave little time to enjoy any of them. Visitors are instead advised to decide what matters most to them, whether that…

The US Coast Guard said the search was under way off the coast of Nantucket. The jet is registered to Latitutde Air Ambulance, according to its tail number. Flight tracking data showed the aircraft departed at about 11.40pm on Friday and disappeared after roughly one hour…

A 19th-century California settlement with a lodge, restaurant, cabins and its own stretch of river has been put on the market for $4.75 million, offering a buyer the chance to take control of the Sierra Nevada outpost of Belden.
