Michael Carrick is under mounting pressure after Manchester United equalled their worst start to a Premier League season with a 1-1 draw at Fulham. United appeared set for a third consecutive defeat after Lisandro Martinez’s own goal put the hosts ahead, but Matheus Cunha’s deflected equaliser in the 89th minute salvaged a point for Carrick’s side. The result offered little comfort against a Fulham team who were winless and second from bottom of the Premier League. United have won only once this season and sit 12th with five points, matching their lowest points total after five matches in the Premier…

Pressure is mounting on Chancellor John Healey to raise taxes on wealth at the Budget, despite warnings from Conservatives and a former Treasury minister that the measures could reduce investment and ultimately bring in less money. Millionaire eco-tycoon and Labour donor Dale Vince has proposed increasing Capital Gains Tax (CGT) and ending interest payments to commercial banks on deposits held with the Bank of England. He said the changes could finance an increase in the personal tax allowance, putting more money into the pockets of millions of people. His proposals come as Mr Healey and Andy Burnham seek ways to…

The gathering in New York will take place against a backdrop of war in the Middle East, Russia’s continuing invasion of Ukraine, rising energy prices, strained alliances and warnings from scientists that artificial intelligence could imperil humanity. António Guterres, who will step down as UN secretary-general at the end of December after two terms, has described the current situation as one of the most dangerous the…

Sam Walker moved closer to a remarkable return for the Sydney Roosters after taking part in training on Monday, just 23 days after undergoing surgery for a syndesmosis injury. The Northern Sea Route is emerging as a new arena for trade, military rivalry and strategic competition, as melting Arctic ice allows commercial vessels to travel earlier in the year while Donald Trump seeks greater American control over Greenland. The developments point to a profound shift in the High North, with Russia, China, the United States and Nato positioning themselves around shipping lanes that could reshape global trade and national security. In May, the liquefied natural gas carrier Christophe de Margerie left Utrenneye, a remote port on Siberia’s Kara Sea coast. The 299-metre vessel, capable of carrying more than 170,000…
