The Alan Jones trial heard further evidence about flowers the former broadcaster allegedly arranged to have delivered weekly to “M” over several years. Defence barrister Gabrielle Bashir, SC, revisited the evidence “M” gave the previous day, asking about the source of the flowers and the arrangements for their delivery. “M” agreed the flowers came from markets rather than a florist. When Ms Bashir asked whether he understood they were a drop-off order from the markets, he said his understanding was that Jones’s driver collected them and delivered them to him. “M” described the gesture as “lovely”. Asked whether he viewed…
A 22-year-old man has suffered serious injuries in a spear attack during a disturbance involving about 100 people in the remote Northern Territory community of Wadeye, police said. The man was struck in the back with a three-pronged spear during a confrontation between two family groups on Monday night. Officers were called at about 11.45pm after reports that people were allegedly carrying compound bows, spears and metal objects. Bloomfield Township in Michigan has introduced a six-month moratorium preventing anyone under 16 from riding electric bikes and electric scooters on sidewalks or township property. The temporary measure was approved by the township’s Board of Trustees as officials consider a permanent ordinance governing the use of the vehicles. Residents can submit written requests for exemptions. Anyone found breaching the restrictions could have their e-bike or scooter confiscated, with the vehicle to be returned to a parent or guardian. The decision follows a crash last week in which two 13-year-old boys were struck by a Ford F-250 while crossing Telegraph Road…
Australian motorists are facing a 37 per cent rise in unleaded petrol prices since July, while the government has refused to cut fuel excise. The decision leaves drivers without relief from the increase, with the key tax policy remaining unchanged. Fuel excise is the central point of contention as motorists confront higher prices at the pump. The government has declined to take action on the tax.
Calls for a slowdown in artificial intelligence development triggered a global sell-off in technology stocks on Monday. The market reaction followed concerns raised about the pace of AI development, with the sector’s leading companies at the centre of the debate. Jessica Inskip, director of investor research at StockBrokers.com, joined The Daily Report to discuss the technology stock sell-off and the calls for a more measured approach to AI development.
US President Donald Trump interrupted a live event to make a surprise call to Jensen Huang, the chief executive of AI chip company Nvidia, and dismissed concerns about the development of artificial intelligence as “a hoax”. Trump spoke to Huang over speakerphone during the event, as fears over AI development were being discussed.
New York Assemblymember Alex Bores is launching a $30 million campaign to unite Democrats behind tougher safeguards for artificial intelligence, after making regulation a central issue in his unsuccessful bid for Congress. The organisation, called Who Decides, is intended to develop a common Democratic position on AI ahead of the 2028 elections. Its website says the group wants candidates “from the top of the ticket on down” to run on a shared AI safety agenda. That agenda would address existing harms linked to the technology, as well as the risk that increasingly powerful systems could disrupt the economy, democracy and…
