Andrew Johns has questioned whether Blaize Talagi has a long-term future with the Penrith Panthers after the young playmaker fell down Ivan Cleary’s pecking order ahead of the 2027 season. Talagi began the year as Penrith’s first-choice five-eighth but has not started in the position since round 21. Jack Cogger has taken over the No 6 jersey, while Jack Cole has also been used when Cogger has been unavailable. “Jett Cleary is coming back and then Jack Cole and Jack Cogger, plenty to see and a big off-season for Blaize,” Johns said. Jett Cleary is due to join the Panthers…
Robotics adoption remains limited among Swiss companies, with only 4 per cent using service robots, 3 per cent employing industrial robots and 1 per cent operating humanoid robots, according to a UBS survey of about 2,500 businesses. The study, conducted with market research firm Intervista in March, found that robot use is concentrated in particular parts of the economy rather than spread widely across Swiss industry and services. Industrial robots are most common in electrical equipment and machinery, where 38 per cent of companies reported using them, followed by the metals sector at 27 per cent. Service robots have made…
A man accused of posing as a San Francisco 49ers player allegedly used dating apps and misleading online search results to defraud at least 26 women of about $1.3 million. Daejon Labrayae Love, 35, and Taylor Jamie Chan, 18, have been charged in the United States with wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud, according to federal prosecutors in Oregon. Investigators allege that Love met women on platforms including Tinder, Bumble, Hinge and Facebook Dating, presenting himself either as a wealthy 49ers player or a successful property investor. He is accused of forming romantic relationships with several of the…
Jesse Kriel powered through Leroy Carter to score the decisive try as South Africa fought back to beat New Zealand 29-24 in the third Test in Johannesburg. The Springboks had fallen 17-12 behind after Will Jordan crossed for the All Blacks, but Kriel responded almost immediately, shrugging off Carter’s attempted tackle before racing over the line. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu added the conversion to put the hosts ahead for the first time. South Africa then seized control through their dominant forward play. Malcolm Marx finished a powerful rolling maul to extend the lead, before another Feinberg-Mngomezulu penalty gave the Springboks a 12-point…
An Airbnb guest convicted of manslaughter over the death of his host failed to ask police whether she was safe after her home went up in flames, a court in Victoria has heard. Timothy Loosemore, 63, was found guilty in June of killing Maree Vermont, 60, at her property in Goldie, north of Melbourne, in August 2023. He was acquitted of murder and is due to be sentenced next week. During a pre-sentence hearing, Justice Michael Tinney said Loosemore’s behaviour in hospital after the fire had been captured on police body-worn camera. “At no time did he ask, ‘have you…
Essendon great Matthew Lloyd has urged Fremantle coach Justin Longmuir to make the bold decision to drop forward Patrick Voss for Friday night’s do-or-die semi-final against Geelong at Optus Stadium. The call comes after the Dockers’ 32-point qualifying-final defeat by Hawthorn on September 3, when Fremantle managed only five goals in a disappointing attacking display. Speaking on 3AW Football, Lloyd said Voss had struggled for an extended period and should be replaced in the side. “I think Patrick Voss has been down for so long I’d consider dropping him next week,” he said. “Over the last month he’s been average,”…
Dr Philip Nitschke, the campaigner known as “Dr Death”, spoke at a London event on Saturday after MPs and campaigners had urged Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood to prevent him from entering Britain. Nitschke, the founder of euthanasia organisation Exit International, appeared at the event to discuss his Kairos device, described by critics as a “suicide collar”. The gathering was held six days before MPs are due to vote on a revived assisted suicide Bill. One person has died and 11 remain missing after a mudslide struck a village in Suichuan County, Jiangxi province, eastern China, following days of torrential rain brought by Typhoon Saudel. Two people were pulled from the debris alive and were reported to be in stable condition. Residents in the affected area were moved to safety as officials warned of the risk of further landslides and other secondary disasters. More than 640 rescuers had reached the scene…

Extreme heat, dangerous fire conditions, storms and flooding are sweeping eastern Australia, with Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria facing sharply contrasting weather on Sunday. Brisbane is expected to reach 34C and Ipswich 36C before a cooler change moves across south-east Queensland later in the afternoon and evening. Smoke has already been reported in Ipswich and parts of Brisbane’s south-west, prompting warnings over the heightened fire risk. Jonathan How, a senior meteorologist at the Bureau of Meteorology, described the conditions as highly unusual for the beginning of spring. “Today will be a scorcher,” he told Sunrise, warning people across south-east…
