Filming for the BBC’s new Beatles drama Hamburg Days has begun in Liverpool city centre, with members of the cast seen on set on Sunday, 30 August.
The six-part series is being filmed in Liverpool, Hamburg and Munich and follows the band’s formative years before they became one of the world’s biggest music acts.
Liverpool Film Office, which is facilitating production in the city, previously confirmed the principal cast. Rhys Mannion plays John Lennon, with Liverpool singer-songwriter Ellis Murphy as Paul McCartney, Harvey Brett as George Harrison, Louis Landau as Stu Sutcliffe and Patrick Gilmore as Pete Best.
The drama is set during the early 1960s and centres on the young Liverpool musicians’ time in Hamburg’s St Pauli district, where they performed in clubs and developed the sound and stage presence that helped shape their future.
Further cast members include Asa Butterfield as Beatles manager Brian Epstein, Jonny Lee Miller as Paul McCartney’s father Jim, Christine Tremarco as John Lennon’s guardian Aunt Mimi and Ryan Sampson as Liverpool promoter Alan Williams.
Hamburg Days is inspired by the autobiography of German artist Klaus Voormann, who is serving as an exclusive consultant on the production. The series is being made by W&B Television and Turbine Studios, with German broadcaster ZDF among its co-financiers.
The BBC has acquired the drama for BBC One and BBC iPlayer. A UK broadcast date has not yet been announced.
