Love Is Blind star Ciara Murphy has defended her dating expectations after viewers accused her of appearing spoilt on the Netflix reality series.
The London Pilates instructor attracted criticism after revealing that she expected a first date to involve a minimum spend of £300, while also recalling that one man had once spent £15,000 on their first date at the Wimbledon men’s tennis final.
Speaking to Netflix’s Tudum, Murphy said the £15,000 occasion was a “one-time thing” and insisted she would not expect someone to spend that amount on her. She also clarified that the £300 threshold applied only to a first date, rather than every occasion.
Murphy said her standards had been shaped by previous relationships in which she felt she had invested time, money and affection without receiving the same in return. She said she now wanted a partner who would make a clear effort to plan and pay for an initial date.
The reality star acknowledged that her comments had proved divisive, saying she had expected some reaction because of her forthright personality but had not anticipated such a polarised response.
She also argued that viewers had not been shown the full context behind her attitude, explaining that she earns her own money, owns property and has a strong support network. Her view, she said, was that anyone entering her life needed to be “a really special person”.
Murphy’s partner on the show, Ajay Cheema, defended her during the backlash and said viewers had missed a more thoughtful side to her character. He described the online criticism as difficult to read and said the woman he experienced during filming was loving, calm and reassuring.
The couple said they believed the programme’s editing had focused heavily on conflict and left out much of the development of their relationship. Murphy and Cheema ultimately married after meeting and dating on Love Is Blind: UK’s third season.
