At least 12 people, including six children, were injured in a shooting near Florida A&M University’s Bragg Memorial Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida, on Saturday evening, October 24.
Police said officers were called to the area of Perry Street and Manatee Street shortly before 8pm, several hours after FAMU’s homecoming football game had ended at the nearby stadium.
Tallahassee shooting leaves 12 injured
Tallahassee Police Chief Lawrence Revell said 11 people suffered gunshot wounds, while another was injured while fleeing the scene. The youngest victim was 11 years old, and at least one of those hurt is believed to be a FAMU student.
Three victims were described as seriously injured, including one in a critical condition. Eight others were reported to have injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Detectives believe a physical confrontation involving two or three people took place before the shooting, although police have not disclosed what led to the dispute or identified those involved.
The department’s Violent Crimes Unit is investigating. No arrests had been announced and police had not named a suspect or person of interest.
FAMU issued a safety alert urging people near Bragg Memorial Stadium and Perry Street to avoid the area or shelter in place while officers dealt with the incident. Authorities have not said the shooting was connected to the university or the homecoming game.
The Rattlers had played Arkansas-Pine Bluff earlier on Saturday, losing 31-28.
Chief Revell said officers already in the area responded immediately, carrying victims to safety and taking them to hospital before the scene had been fully secured. He described the presence of children among those injured as “especially heartbreaking”.
Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to contact the Tallahassee Police Department on 850-891-2000. Anonymous reports can be made to Crime Solvers on 850-574-TIPS.
