The second-generation Dacia Spring has been unveiled as a larger, more sophisticated electric car — but its move to European production and a new platform means it will no longer hold the title of Europe’s cheapest EV.
Dacia expects the new Spring to start at just under £18,000 in the UK, a substantial increase on the current model’s £11,990 list price. The company has yet to confirm final British pricing.
The Spring has been completely redesigned and will be built at Renault Group’s plant in Novo Mesto, Slovenia, rather than being imported from China. Dacia said the move marks the beginning of a wider electric-car programme that will bring four fully electric models to market by 2030.
While it retains the name of its predecessor, the new car is based on Renault Group’s RG-EV small platform and is 18cm wider. The extra width is intended to improve cabin space and give the compact hatchback a more substantial stance.
Dacia has also replaced the original car’s rounded appearance with sharper, more geometric styling. Inside, the Spring gains a seven-inch digital instrument display and, on higher-specification versions, a 10.1-inch central touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
New Dacia Spring gains more range and power
The new electric motor produces 80bhp and 175Nm of torque, allowing the Spring to reach 62mph in 12.1 seconds and continue to a top speed of 81mph.
Power comes from a 27.5kWh lithium-iron-phosphate battery, with an official WLTP range of up to 155 miles. Dacia says the battery has been sized around the typical use of existing Spring owners, many of whom use the car for short daily journeys and charge at home.
Standard charging is carried out through a 6.6kW AC system, while an optional fast-charge package adds 11kW AC and 50kW DC capability. With the latter, the battery can be replenished from 15 to 80 per cent in about 28 minutes.
Dacia says more than 210,000 examples of the Spring have been sold across more than 40 countries since its launch in 2021. The new model is intended to preserve its low-cost approach while offering the space, equipment and driving performance expected from a modern small electric car.
