A fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta has left people dead and others injured, Canada’s Defence Minister David McGuinty has confirmed.
Mr McGuinty said the incident at the Canadian Forces base remained “very, very active and delicate”, but did not disclose how many people had died or been hurt. The cause of the fire has not been given.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are involved in the investigation, while the Canadian Armed Forces and federal, provincial and local authorities are coordinating the emergency response.
The Municipal District of Wainwright said the blaze crossed the base’s fence on Saturday and was spreading quickly in high winds. Firefighters from several jurisdictions were sent to the scene, while the nearby community provided hospital and firefighting support.
No evacuation order was in effect, according to the district.
Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as serious and said: “Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected.”
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called the fire “significant and tragic” and said it was affecting many military personnel. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre said he had spoken with Mr Carney and Mr McGuinty to offer his support.
“Pray for Wainwright, everyone,” Mr Poilievre wrote on social media, urging people in the area to follow emergency instructions and keep roads clear for first responders.
