Fatalities and injuries have been reported after a major fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta, prompting a co-ordinated emergency response involving military, federal, provincial and local authorities.
Defence Minister David McGuinty said people had been killed and injured in what he described as an incident at the base. “I’m saddened to share that there have been both fatalities and injuries as a result of an incident on the base,” he said on Saturday.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police are involved in the investigation, which they described as “very, very active and delicate”. Authorities have not disclosed how the fire started or provided further details about those affected.
The fire crossed the base’s fence earlier on Saturday and was spreading rapidly in high winds, according to the Municipal District of Wainwright. Firefighters from several jurisdictions were attending, while the nearby community was providing hospital and firefighting support.
No evacuation order was in effect.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said a serious incident had caused a major fire at the base and that the federal government was working closely with Alberta officials and local authorities.
“Our thoughts are with all the brave women and men affected,” Mr Carney said.
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith described the fire as “significant and tragic” and said it was affecting many military personnel. She thanked first responders and those providing care and support to people affected by the incident.
Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre said he had spoken with Mr Carney and the defence minister to offer support. He urged people in the area to follow emergency instructions and keep roads clear for first responders.
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is near the town of Wainwright, about 180km south-east of Edmonton. Officials are continuing to establish what happened and are expected to provide further information.
