The final design for upgrades to the Mt Claremont Village shopping precinct has been completed, with the City of Nedlands preparing tender documents for work on Asquith Street.
The project covers the section between Rochdale Road and Adderley Street, where the existing pavement is ageing and the road is regularly used by shoppers, pedestrians, parked vehicles and local traffic.
Plans include a wider paved footpath outside the shopping village between Olearia Lane and Strickland Street, renewed pavement and asphalt, drainage improvements and new kerbing. Garden areas are also proposed around the Strickland Street and Asquith Street intersection.
The design follows a community consultation held in July, which attracted 40 submissions from residents, landowners and employees. Feedback was considered alongside road safety, accessibility, drainage, funding and construction constraints.
A proposal to reduce the speed limit on Asquith Street from 50km/h to 40km/h received support from 95 per cent of respondents. The change, which would cover the stretch from Rochdale Road to Landon Way and include the central retail strip, still requires approval from Main Roads WA.
Overall support for the project stood at 66 per cent, while 24 per cent backed some elements and 10 per cent did not support the upgrades.
Several respondents called for wider, more accessible footpaths near the shops. The city said this would be incorporated “where practicable”, while proposed landscaping would be checked to ensure it met sight-distance requirements at intersections.
Requests concerning improvements to surrounding laneways and drainage will be passed to the relevant City of Nedlands team for future consideration. Suggestions for additional bus shelters will be referred to the Public Transport Authority.
Further updates on the appointment of a contractor and the construction timetable will be provided as the project progresses.
