The Melbourne Cricket Ground has been transformed for the NFL’s first regular-season game in Australia, with the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers set to meet before a sell-out crowd on Friday, September 11.
The AFL and cricket venue now carries the full American football layout, including yard lines, hash marks, numbers, goalposts, painted end zones and team logos. The match will kick off at 10.35am local time, with the NFL expecting about 100,000 spectators at the MCG. ([nfl.com](https://www.nfl.com/international/games/melbourne/?utm_source=openai))
The field has not been positioned perfectly centrally because both teams wanted to use the existing AFL coaches’ boxes at midfield. Empty space has been left between the playing surface and the lowest tier of seating, with NFL officials deciding that filling it would create potential problems for access, drinks and other amenities.
New camera positions required by the league have been installed around the ground, while members of the media have been moved from the usual press box on the MCC members’ side to a higher position in the stands.
Todd Barnes, a senior event architect at Populous, the company engaged by the NFL to prepare the venue, said the MCG was among the finest international stadiums he had visited but suggested it could benefit from additional LED lighting and larger video screens.
“This is probably one of the best international stadiums that I’ve been in,” Barnes said. “But one of the things I’ve noticed in the NFL marketplaces is that the more LED lighting that you have, it just seems like it’s a really big deal.”
The MCG’s two high-definition scoreboards measure 25.24 metres wide and 13.1 metres high, although Barnes said larger displays would help bring supporters closer to the action.
Rams and 49ers prepare for historic MCG clash
The match will be the first NFL regular-season fixture staged in Australia, following the 49ers’ arrival in Melbourne after a charter flight lasting about 15 hours. San Francisco has spent almost a week acclimatising, while the Rams are due to arrive on Thursday before holding their only practice at Marvel Stadium. Los Angeles will be without Aaron Donald, whose return from retirement had been one of the most anticipated features of the game. Head coach Sean McVay said the three-time defensive player of the year was not ready following a two-year absence, although he expected Donald to return sooner rather than later. “He’s doing a great job. I think he’ll be ready to go sooner rather than later, but we’re making a decision that we think is best for him and for our team,” McVay said.
Donald’s absence means there will be no chance to see him and Myles Garrett hunting San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy together in what former NFL player and ESPN analyst Jeff Saturday described as one of the sport’s most intimidating sights.
Garrett, who has been managing swelling in a knee, is expected to play. McVay said the defensive end had been handled carefully during preparations but would be “ready to go” at the MCG. San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan responded with amusement when told Donald would not feature.
“Very excited. I told you guys last time I talked to you guys, he was definitely playing. So I’ve never been more excited to be wrong about something,” Shanahan said.
The 49ers have injury concerns of their own after defensive tackle Alfred Collins tore his patellar tendon in training on Tuesday, ruling him out for the season.
Shanahan dismissed suggestions that the contrasting travel schedules could provide either team with an excuse, saying the result would come down to which side played the better football.
“The real thing that’s going to help this game is who plays better football, and whoever doesn’t,” he said.
With veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford leading the Rams, attention will also fall on offensive weapons Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. San Francisco’s supporters have meanwhile begun to dominate Melbourne’s streets, with fans in red recalling the franchise’s history through Joe Montana, Steve Young and Jerry Rice.
