Five people have been killed and more than a dozen injured after a gunman opened fire on Krakow’s Main Square, with police officers among those wounded.
The attacker drove into the popular tourist destination on Saturday afternoon and fired at people at random, according to Krakow police. Officers later shot and wounded him during a gunfight a short distance from the square.
Police spokeswoman Katarzyna Cisło told TVN24 that the suspect was wearing military-style fatigues and had used a military-type long gun. Officers found other weapons and ammunition in his car.
Police said the gunman had acted alone and that the public was safe. Mass shootings are uncommon in Poland.
Images from the scene showed police and ambulances in the centre of the city, while a Polish Medical Air Rescue helicopter landed in the square.
The city’s municipal transport company said a tram driver reported at about 3pm that a man in a moving car had fired at the tram as it passed near the Main Square. The window of the driver’s cabin was shattered.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said in a post on X that police were investigating the attack.
Krakow, Poland’s second-largest city, lies about 250 kilometres from Warsaw. Its Main Square attracts millions of visitors each year, with about 15 million tourists visiting Krakow annually.
