A Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office deputy was injured when a stolen vehicle being pursued by Minneapolis police ran a red light and crashed into his squad car in Minneapolis early on Friday morning.
The collision happened at about 2am after officers responded to reports of people breaking into vehicles in the city’s south-east. Police said the stolen car was being driven at high speed, running red lights and travelling into oncoming traffic before the pursuit ended near 26th Avenue South and East 9th Street. The deputy was driving through a green light when the fleeing vehicle struck his car. Airbags deployed and he was treated at the scene before being expected to recover from his injuries.
His damaged patrol vehicle was towed away. The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office said no serious injuries had been reported.
Four arrested after Minneapolis pursuit
Three teenagers and an 18-year-old were arrested after three people fled the stolen vehicle on foot, according to the Minneapolis Police Department. The teenagers were aged 15, 16 and 16, police said.
One of the teenagers was taken to Hennepin Healthcare for assessment before being booked into the Hennepin County Juvenile Detention Centre. The other two were also detained, while the 18-year-old was booked into the county jail. Police said a search of the vehicle recovered a firearm, a replica firearm, suspected narcotics, masks, tools believed to have been used to break windows, flashlights and screwdrivers. The car had been reported stolen and was being investigated in connection with a series of so-called smash-and-grab incidents.
All four suspects were booked on probable cause for alleged weapons violations, property damage, receiving stolen property and fleeing police. No final charging decision has been announced.
The Minneapolis Police Department is leading the investigation because the pursuit began with its officers.
“We are grateful that there were no serious injuries and that our deputy will be ok,” the sheriff’s office said. “This is another reminder of the danger our deputies and officers face every day.”
