A security operation is being introduced in Braintree and two other Essex town centres after concerns about the daily arrival of asylum seekers from the Wethersfield accommodation centre.
Essex County Council said on Friday 28 August that security staff would be deployed in Braintree, Colchester and Chelmsford for an initial three-month trial. The move follows complaints about groups of men being taken by minibus from the former airfield to nearby urban areas.
Braintree, a historic market town once associated with the wool and silk trades, has become one of the places most visibly affected by the Home Office’s use of Wethersfield. The rural site lies about 11 miles from the nearest town and has no conventional public transport link.
The council said the operation, named Operation Vanguard, was intended to reassure residents and deter antisocial behaviour. Its leader, Peter Harris, said the authority had received concerns “for many months now” about the daily transport of asylum seekers into the three centres. Wethersfield currently houses about 800 single adult men awaiting decisions on their asylum claims. Wethersfield asylum accommodation and the daily shuttle service
The site was opened in July 2023 on a former Ministry of Defence airfield. Government guidance describes it as basic accommodation for non-detained asylum seekers, with catering, healthcare, welfare services, security and transport into nearby towns.
Planning rules require a regular free shuttle service to Braintree, Colchester and Chelmsford, with buses running to each destination at least three times a day. The arrangement is intended to give residents access to shops and essential services because of the site’s isolated location. Asylum seekers living in catered accommodation receive £9.95 a week in financial support, rather than the higher rate paid to those who must buy and prepare their own food. The Home Office says the Wethersfield site provides safe and functional accommodation and that it works with councils, police and community organisations to maintain public safety and community cohesion.
