Sandra Bullock has revealed that she hid her newborn son Louis inside a hockey bag to protect him from photographers during the collapse of her marriage to Jesse James in 2010.
The actress, now 62, said she realised paparazzi would descend on her home after news emerged that James had been unfaithful, while the public remained unaware that she had secretly adopted a baby.
Speaking to Jennifer Aniston for Interview magazine, Bullock said she had found hockey bags while clearing out a cupboard and used one to conceal Louis’s car seat.
“I put him in his car carrier, put it in the hockey bag, and zipped the hockey bag around him,” she said. “Then I carried the hockey bag to the car, as though I was just carrying any random hockey bag.”
She added jokingly: “Child Protective Services, do not come after me.”
Bullock said Louis had joined her family at the end of 2009, only months before her marriage to West Coast Choppers founder James unravelled. She described the period as a time when she had to protect her privacy with extreme care.
“You have to operate like the CIA,” Bullock said, adding that private information could become a source of money for people close to a celebrity.
“If people near you mean you harm, no matter how covert you are and how much pre-planning you do, your privacy is information that brings them cash,” she said. “I had it happen recently and it broke my heart.”
Bullock and James married in 2005, but divorced in June 2010 after reports of his infidelity. James entered a rehabilitation facility in Arizona that April, apologising to Bullock, though the marriage did not survive.
The actress also told Aniston that motherhood now takes priority over her career. Bullock adopted her daughter Laila in 2015 and said she would not accept work that meant being separated from her children.
“If the kids can’t be with me, I’m not going,” she said, explaining that any job requiring travel would have to take place during the summer holidays.
Her conversation with Aniston was published on 8 September, as Bullock returns to the screen in Practical Magic 2. The sequel, starring Bullock and Nicole Kidman, is due to be released in cinemas in North America on 10 September 2026.
