IKEA is closing three smaller Plan & Order locations in the Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia region by the end of 2026, including a Georgetown site that opened less than a year ago.
The Georgetown planning pop-up will shut on October 18, followed by the Annapolis location on October 31. IKEA’s Fairfax Plan & Order point will close on November 30.
The company said the decision formed part of its strategy to make the business more affordable, accessible and sustainable, while continuing to invest in home delivery, collection services and its online shopping experience.
Unlike IKEA’s full-size stores, the smaller Plan & Order locations are primarily designed for customers planning larger projects such as kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms. They do not generally carry stock for same-day purchases, but customers can arrange delivery or collect eligible orders.
“We continue to test, explore and develop new ways for customers to meet IKEA while investing in home delivery, pick-up services and our online experience,” the company said.
The closures will affect three different formats in the region. IKEA opened the Georgetown site on November 5, 2025, after moving its planning operation from Arlington, Virginia.
Customers with existing projects will be able to continue working with IKEA at other locations in the region or through a remote planner. The company said employees at the affected sites would have the opportunity to move to nearby stores.
Other IKEA locations serving customers in the area include Plan & Order points in Gaithersburg and Hunt Valley, Maryland, as well as larger stores in College Park, Maryland, and Woodbridge, Virginia.
