Jamie Vardy is returning to English football after signing for Burnley on a contract until the end of the season.
The 39-year-old striker joins the Championship club after spending last season in Serie A with Cremonese. Burnley confirmed the move on Sunday, describing Vardy as an experienced forward who could add pace, finishing and leadership to Nicky Hayen’s side.
The Clarets are currently bottom of the Championship after Saturday’s 2-1 home defeat by Bristol City, which left them with two points from their opening five league matches.
Vardy said he was “really happy” to have joined Burnley and praised the club’s history and supporters.
“This club has a proper footballing history and passionate fans who deserve a team that represents them and their town,” he said. “I can’t wait to get going on the pitch and help the team move in the right direction.”
Hayen welcomed the signing, saying Vardy’s experience and leadership would be valuable to the squad and expressing his belief that the former Leicester City forward could make a significant impact during the campaign.
Vardy left Leicester at the end of last season after 13 years with the club, having helped them win the Premier League title in 2016. He now returns to England with Burnley hoping to revive their fortunes in the second tier.
