Evan, formerly known as Heeseung of K-pop group ENHYPEN, has revealed that he was diagnosed with malignant lymphoma as a child and underwent cancer treatment in primary school.
The singer discussed the experience in an interview with Weverse Magazine published on Friday, saying he had not spoken publicly about it since becoming an artist.
“I think it’s time I talked about this,” Evan said, recalling how he had suffered a persistent cough before suddenly being unable to breathe after taking a few steps while playing football. He was later told at hospital that he had cancer.
Evan said the treatment was difficult, but he tried to remain brave for his mother, who cared for him throughout the ordeal. While in hospital, he played guitar and hosted talent shows for fellow patients.
He also described the distress of seeing other children die during treatment, saying he kept thinking: “I want to live so badly, I want to go home.”
Although he eventually recovered, Evan said returning to school was challenging. He had less energy than before and was teased while his hair grew back after chemotherapy, which contributed to him becoming more withdrawn.
The experience has since influenced his music. Evan said songs on his solo mini-album, DEATH OF ME, reflect his determination to show that difficult periods can eventually give way to better days.
He left ENHYPEN in March 2026 to pursue a solo career. Management company BELIFT LAB said at the time that the decision followed discussions about his distinct musical direction and confirmed that he would continue preparing music as a solo artist.
