Most major shops, supermarkets and fast-food chains in the US will remain open on Labor Day, Monday 7 September 2026, although some branches will operate reduced or locally adjusted hours.
Walmart and Target are expected to trade during their usual hours, while CVS pharmacies will also open. CVS has warned that some individual shops and pharmacy counters may have shorter opening times.
Which supermarkets are open on Labor Day?
Aldi will operate limited hours, with customers advised to check their local branch before travelling. Food Lion, Trader Joe’s and most Kroger shops will open normally, although Kroger has noted there may be a small number of exceptions.
Stop & Shop stores will trade as usual, but their pharmacies will be closed. Wegmans will also open, although certain departments may have restricted hours.
Among the retailers expected to open are Dollar General, Home Depot, HomeGoods, Homesense, Ikea, JCPenney, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, Macy’s, Marshalls, Michaels, Nordstrom, Petco, Sierra and TJ Maxx.
Opening times can vary between branches, particularly in shopping centres and locations with separate pharmacy, garden or food departments. Customers should check with their local store before setting out.
Fast-food restaurants and Starbucks
Burger King, Domino’s, IHOP, McDonald’s and Taco Bell are expected to serve customers on Labor Day, but individual restaurants may set their own hours.
Starbucks cafés will also be open. The chain’s branches can have different schedules, so customers should confirm the hours of their nearest café before visiting.
What will be closed on Labor Day?
The US stock market will shut for the federal holiday, with trading due to resume on Tuesday 8 September at 9.30am Eastern Time.
All US Postal Service post offices will be closed and regular mail deliveries will be suspended on Monday. Postal retail services and normal deliveries will resume on Tuesday 8 September, although self-service kiosks will remain available at some locations.
Major banks will also close in observance of Labor Day. Online banking and some automated services are expected to remain available, but processing times for certain transactions may be affected by the holiday.
