A 37-year-old man has been charged after allegedly carrying an axe near Dunsborough Primary School, prompting a lockdown at the Western Australian school on Friday morning.
Police allege the man entered the backyards of two homes in Dunsborough before making his way towards the school on Turner Street at about 9.25am on September 4.
The axe was allegedly protruding from his backpack as he yelled and screamed at members of the public within hearing distance of pupils. Witnesses challenged him, and he left the area before being arrested by police a short time later.
A police spokeswoman said staff had taken precautionary action after consulting officers.
“As a precaution, school staff enacted lockdown procedures in consultation with police,” she said.
The man has been charged with two counts of trespass and one count of being armed in a way that may cause fear. He also faces charges of possessing amphetamine and disorderly behaviour in public.
He appeared before Busselton Magistrates Court on Friday and was remanded in custody. He is due to appear again on September 8.
