A 37-year-old man has been arrested over the death of Kylee McHugh, whose body was found after a fire at her unit in Canberra in May.
Police are expected to charge the man with murder and arson following a months-long investigation into the 46-year-old’s death. He is due to appear before an ACT court on Tuesday.
Emergency services were called to the ground-floor property on Osborne Place, in the Canberra suburb of Belconnen, at about 6.40am on May 18. Ms McHugh, who lived at the unit, was found inside and declared dead at the scene.
ACT Policing began treating the death as a homicide after detectives determined that the circumstances surrounding the fatal fire were suspicious.
In an appeal issued in May, investigators asked to speak to anyone who had been in contact with Ms McHugh during the three days before her death.
Police also sought dashcam or CCTV footage recorded between 9pm on May 17 and 7am on May 18 in the area bounded by College Street, Haydon Drive, Belconnen Way and Eastern Valley Way.
Acting Detective Inspector Chris Watson said at the time that officers were still working to establish both the cause of Ms McHugh’s death and how the fire had started.
Police are expected to provide further details about the investigation when the accused man appears in court.
