Manchester United have been urged to sign Manchester City youngster Nico O’Reilly, with former player Quinton Fortune identifying the versatile defender as a potential solution to the club’s lack of depth at left-back.
O’Reilly, 21, has developed into an increasingly dependable option for City after moving from midfield into a full-back role. His performances have shown he can cope with the demands of regular Premier League football despite playing in a position that was not originally his natural one.

Fortune believes O’Reilly’s ability to operate in several positions could make him particularly valuable to United. The England international can also cover at centre-back and in midfield, offering tactical flexibility alongside his work at left-back.
“Players coming directly from City, I don’t know how United fans would take that!” Fortune told Football365.
He added: “But they have wonderful players. Number one I’d say Nico O’Reilly at left-back is brilliant, he can cover center-back and midfield, similar to John O’Shea.”
Luke Shaw remains United’s senior option on the left side of defence, but his injury record has made the position a concern. Although he enjoyed a more consistent 2025/26 campaign, relying on Shaw throughout another demanding season could represent a significant risk.
O’Reilly’s emergence at Manchester City has been notable because he was primarily developed as a midfielder before being used at full-back. His strength, pace and ability to handle one-on-one situations have helped him establish himself as a regular starter.
For United, a move for O’Reilly would provide more than additional cover. His versatility and age could make him a possible long-term option at left-back, while his Premier League experience would give the club a player already accustomed to the demands of top-level football.
