Ethan Mbappé was sent off after catching Real Betis defender Natan with an elbow during Lille’s 3-2 defeat in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
The Lille midfielder was shown a straight red card in the 56th minute after the incident was reviewed by the video assistant referee. Referee Georgi Kabakov had initially allowed play to continue before consulting the pitchside monitor.
Mbappé’s dismissal came shortly after Real Betis had taken the lead for the first time. Marc Bartra headed in his second goal of the evening before Troy Parrott put the Spanish side 3-2 ahead.
The 19-year-old had made a positive start to the match and supplied the assist for Ayase Ueda’s opening goal after 12 minutes. Alexsandro Ribeiro later restored Lille’s advantage before Bartra’s equaliser.
The defeat marked a difficult start to Lille’s Champions League campaign, with the French club forced to play the final stages with 10 men.
