Melania Trump is set to announce a $5 million scholarship fund for students who have experienced foster care during a visit to Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge on Saturday.
The permanent endowment has been established through the first lady’s “Fostering the Future” initiative and will support eligible LSU students. The White House has not disclosed the source of the money. Mrs Trump will make the announcement at LSU before attending the university’s football game against the Alabama Crimson Tide at Tiger Stadium. The game is scheduled to kick off at 2.30pm local time, with the foster care initiative due to be highlighted across the campus and on the field before the match. LSU scholarship fund for foster care students
The programme is intended to create lasting educational opportunities for young people who have spent time in the US foster care system. LSU is among more than 20 American universities involved in the Fostering the Future initiative, which offers support and scholarships to current and former foster youth. One student expected to be recognised at the game is LSU junior Wynter Allen, who has received a $10,000 scholarship through the programme. Mr Allen entered foster care in California at the age of 16 and said the award had lifted a significant financial burden as he works towards a degree in journalism. “That’s just a huge weight off of my shoulders,” he told local broadcaster WAFB after receiving confirmation of the scholarship.
Melania Trump has made foster care a central focus of her public work since 2021. Earlier this year, she urged Congress to update federal support for young people leaving the care system, arguing that difficulties with housing, transport and other necessities can affect their education and prospects for financial independence.
“We can close this gap,” she told members of the House Ways and Means Committee in April. “New legislation for the foster care community is a moral imperative.”
The initiative follows an executive order signed by President Donald Trump in November 2025 bringing together federal agencies, universities, private companies and charitable organisations to expand education and employment opportunities for people who have experienced foster care.
