Democratic Senate hopeful James Talarico is holding a commanding lead over Republican rival Ken Paxton in Texas, with more than half the votes counted.
Talarico has secured 59.5 per cent of the vote, putting him more than one million votes ahead of Paxton, who has received about 39 per cent.
The result so far points to a potentially historic Democratic performance in the Lone Star State, with figures of this kind not seen in Texas for more than 35 years.
However, votes are still to be counted in rural counties, where support is expected to favour the Republicans. It remains unclear whether those ballots will be enough to erase Talarico’s lead.
Paxton’s performance is also a setback for Donald Trump, who had backed him in the Senate race.
