Neighbours of Nicolas Cage were ordered from their homes after a huge sinkhole opened outside the actor’s beachfront property in Malibu, California, following the collapse of its driveway.
Firefighters discovered the damage early on Tuesday, September 8, while responding to a suspected gas main break in the 31600 block of Sea Level Drive, the City of Malibu said.
The collapse was linked to coastal erosion and later grew to about 25 to 30ft deep and roughly 30ft by 60ft wide. The damage left the private road dangerously narrow and restricted access for residents and emergency vehicles.
Malibu officials declared a local emergency and ordered evacuations affecting 31 properties along Sea Level Drive. Five homes were initially marked as unsafe and prohibited from entry, while further properties faced evacuation because vehicles could no longer reach them safely.
The Southern California Gas Company attended the scene and shut off the gas supply after the collapse caused a leak. No injuries were reported.
City officials warned that high tides and rain associated with former Hurricane Marie could worsen the situation. A temporary shelter was established at Malibu High School for people affected by the evacuation order.
Property records identify the damaged oceanfront home as belonging to Cage, although representatives for the Oscar-winning actor did not immediately comment.
