Arizona is set for a brief return to unsettled weather before Phoenix enjoys a warm, sunny weekend, with temperatures expected to climb to about 82F (28C) by Sunday.
Friday will bring a high of around 79F (26C) in Phoenix, with skies ranging from mostly sunny to partly sunny. While western parts of the state should remain dry, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are possible across eastern Arizona from morning into the evening.
The rain is expected to be generally light and short-lived, although some areas could see briefly heavier bursts. Forecasters do not anticipate widespread flooding from Friday’s showers because the weather system is expected to move through quickly.
Phoenix forecast turns sunny for the weekend
Conditions should settle by Saturday as high pressure builds across the western United States and the south-west. Phoenix is forecast to reach about 82F (28C) on both Saturday and Sunday, with sunshine expected throughout the weekend.
The National Weather Service’s Phoenix office is also forecasting largely clear or sunny conditions across the city through the middle of next week, with daytime highs remaining broadly between 76F and 82F (24C and 28C). The prolonged dry spell will give ground and waterways time to recover after the heavy rainfall that affected the region last weekend. However, flood warnings remain in place along parts of the Verde, Salt and Gila rivers in and around Maricopa County.
The National Weather Service said some flooding was linked to continuing releases from upstream dams, including along the Verde River. People are being urged to avoid flooded roads and river crossings, while recreation near affected waterways remains unsafe.
