The mother of reality star Kash has called for the woman accused of attacking her daughter to be jailed, arguing that the confrontation led to the fatal shooting in Oakland, California.
Police say Kash was involved in a fight with the woman on 11 October when her sister, Vernika Dunbar, intervened. Dunbar allegedly attempted to strike the woman with a handgun, but the weapon discharged and Kash was hit.
Kash was taken to hospital after the shooting and was later pronounced dead. Dunbar was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, assault with a firearm and carrying a loaded firearm in public, all felonies.
Kash’s mother, Cynthia, believes the shooting was accidental and that Dunbar was trying to protect her sister. She said Dunbar had not intended to harm Kash and could not have expected the gun to fire.
Cynthia also said her daughters had no animosity towards one another and that the family was extremely close. She maintained that Dunbar did not usually carry weapons, and said she did not know who owned the gun or why her daughter had it that night.
Earlier that day, the sisters had attended their niece’s flag football game. They later went to a motorcycle club, where Cynthia said they sang together and enjoyed the evening.
She said no one had anticipated violence and described the shooting as a tragedy that should never have happened, while insisting that the woman involved in the earlier altercation should be held responsible for allegedly attacking Kash.
