Seattle police are still searching for the driver of a red Acura sedan accused of striking skateboarder Jordan Brito in South Lake Union and fleeing the scene, leaving him with severe head and facial injuries.
The collision happened at about 5.27am on 12 August in the 800 block of Harrison Street, as Brito was travelling to work. A witness told police the car was heading west before hitting him and driving north on Eighth Avenue. Seattle Fire Department medics took Brito, who was 20 at the time, to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition. He has since turned 21 and is recovering at home after several operations for multiple skull fractures and bleeding on the brain.

Brito has no memory of the crash or the weeks that followed. His mother, Kelly McDonald, said the family had been told a nearby camera might have captured the incident, but that it was facing a tree.
“Somebody hit him from behind,” she said. “It was very obvious they did that, and instead of stopping and getting them help, they just took off and left them to die.”
His injuries have left him in severe pain and extremely fatigued, with sensitivity to light. One eye remains sewn shut as part of his treatment, while his family provides round-the-clock care at home.
“He’s awake probably four hours out of the 24,” McDonald said. “He’s still sleeping a lot.”
Brito was uninsured when the crash occurred and did not qualify for a formal rehabilitation facility. He has since obtained health insurance, although the policy is still being processed, and doctors have told his family he may not be able to return to work for about a year.
Despite the extent of his injuries, Brito recently celebrated his 21st birthday with his twin brother. He said his recovery had been helped by his family, friends and other supporters.
“I’m making as speedy a recovery as I can, and it’s not only just because of myself, but my family, my friends, and everyone who has ever supported me in the past month,” he said.
A fundraising appeal has been launched to help with his recovery costs. McDonald has urged the driver to come forward and face the consequences of leaving the scene.
Detectives from the Seattle Police Department’s Traffic Collision Investigation Squad are investigating.
