Six people were shot on a crowded street near the University of Delaware during Halloween celebrations, prompting a major police response and sending people running for safety.
Newark police said the shooting happened at about 11.13pm on Saturday, 31 October, on the south pavement of East Main Street, directly opposite Choate Street.
All six victims were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Police have not released their identities or conditions, and no arrests have been announced.
Witnesses said large crowds had gathered near bars and restaurants when gunfire broke out. Jayden Ngalim told NBC10 Philadelphia: “People were running, screaming. They had helicopters in the sky flashing lights on people. The people were speeding down the road. It got chaotic like quick.”
Landon Singleton, who helped one of the wounded, said he removed his shirt and pressed it against a young victim’s gunshot wound until emergency responders arrived.
The University of Delaware issued an emergency alert at 11.29pm, warning members of the community to avoid the area. Newark police said there was no apparent ongoing threat to public safety linked to the incident.
Main Street was closed during the investigation, with the affected stretch between South Chapel and Haines streets shut for about five hours. The road had reopened by roughly 3am on Sunday.
Police are asking anyone with video footage, photographs or information about the shooting to contact Detective Paige Klein at Newark Police.
Amid speculation online, Klondike Kate’s said the violence did not happen inside the restaurant or on its property.
