A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after allegedly stabbing his father while trying to protect his mother during a fight at the family home in Castro Valley, California.
John Thomas Powell was taken into custody following the incident on Saturday, September 5, at a property on Parsons Avenue near Seven Hills Road, where the family had lived for about a year.
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said a 51-year-old man and his wife were involved in a physical altercation when their son heard his mother in distress. Deputies allege that Powell obtained an edged weapon and stabbed his father.
The injured man was taken to hospital, where he later died. His name has not been released.

Neighbours described a substantial police response at the house, with officers arriving with weapons drawn and a succession of patrol vehicles attending the scene.
Nora Patterson, who watched from her porch, said deputies removed the three family members from the property separately. Powell was led away in handcuffs, while his mother appeared shaken.
“It’s tragic, you know? He lost his life. And the poor guy was only 20 years old, and he was trying to protect his mom, supposedly,” Patterson said.
Another neighbour, Raquel Torres Casillas, said she was shocked by the incident.
“We just feel bad because, you know, it was a family issue,” she said. “It’s sad because it’s a family, you know, breaking up.”
Powell remains in custody while prosecutors consider the case. The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office is expected to decide whether formal charges should be filed.
Legal analyst Michael Cardoza said the investigation would focus in part on the level of threat posed to Powell’s mother during the confrontation.
He said the circumstances could affect whether the stabbing was considered justifiable homicide or manslaughter, depending on whether her life was in immediate danger and what Powell believed was happening.
The victim’s wife has declined to comment publicly.
