Dove Cameron chose filmmaker Kenny Ortega to officiate her wedding to Damiano David because of the personal significance he holds in her life.
The actress, 30, said she and the 27-year-old singer wanted someone who “meant something to one of us personally” to lead the ceremony.
Cameron told Coveteur that David felt it was especially fitting for the officiant to be close to her. Her father was unable to attend, while the logistics of holding the wedding in Italy meant many of the couple’s guests could not make it.
Ortega has been an important mentor and father figure to Cameron since they first worked together on the Disney Channel film Descendants, in which she played Mal.
“I’ve been very lucky to have a large number of mentors and father figures alike, who stepped into my life in a nurturing role when I was looking for it,” Cameron said.
She added: “Kenny will forever be one of the first people to see me for who I was, to choose me, nurture me, and help me become who I am.”
How Dove Cameron met Kenny Ortega
Cameron and Ortega met during pre-production on Descendants. Ortega directed and choreographed the three films in the 2015 to 2019 trilogy, as well as serving as executive producer on each one.
He is also known for directing and choreographing the High School Musical trilogy, The Cheetah Girls 2, Newsies and Hocus Pocus. Cameron also joked: “who is more of a showman than the Kenny Ortega?”
