Two people are missing after a French-registered fishing boat sank in the English Channel off Plymouth, with three others rescued and taken to hospital.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency was alerted shortly after 6pm on Saturday, August 29, after the vessel, carrying five people, was reported to be in distress.
The boat was believed to have been southwest of the Eddystone Lighthouse, about 15 miles south of Plymouth, when the emergency response was launched.
HM Coastguard deployed a rescue helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft, while RNLI lifeboats from Falmouth and Plymouth joined local vessels in the search. A Falcon 50 aircraft operated by the French Navy was also sent to assist.
Three people were recovered from the fishing boat and taken to hospital for further care. The vessel later sank.
On Sunday night, the MCA described the two remaining crew members as “unaccounted for” and said the search had been “suspended pending further information”.
The agency had earlier said an intensive search was maintained through the night and continued during Sunday with multiple assets involved.
No further details about the missing crew members or the circumstances in which the boat sank have been released.
