Alexander Zverev has won the US Open men’s singles title after defeating Ben Shelton in four sets, securing his second Grand Slam championship of the year.
The German had already broken through at the French Open earlier this year, and added the New York major to his growing list of achievements on Sunday.
Shelton’s defeat ended his bid to become the first American man to win a major title since Andy Roddick’s US Open triumph in 2003. His appearance also made him the first Black American man to reach the US Open final since Arthur Ashe in 1972.
The result came after Shelton overcame fellow American Frances Tiafoe in a thrilling semi-final to reach the final.
