Andrew Garfield has said he would “love to have kids” and start a family, admitting he is “not entirely proud” that he is yet to become a father.
The British-American actor, who turned 43 in August, made the comments in an interview recorded before his birthday for the SmartLess podcast.
Speaking to hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett, Garfield said: “I’m 42 and I’m childless and I’m not entirely proud of that. Like, I would love to have kids. I would love to start a family.”
Garfield was discussing his role in The Magic Faraway Tree, a family film which explores the effect of technology and screens on children.
The actor said the film was not intended to be “anti-technology”, but encouraged families to reconnect with one another and with the natural world.
“It’s about, you know, getting kids back in touch with themselves, with each other, with nature, with their own nature, with the family unit, with community,” he said.
Garfield added that he had enjoyed showing the film to friends with young children and described their reactions as “the best reviews I’ve ever had in my life”.
The actor has been linked to A Complete Unknown star Monica Barbaro since early 2025. The pair were photographed together at Wimbledon in July last year, where they were seen sharing a kiss while attending the tennis championships in London.
Garfield has previously spoken about the importance of family while discussing his work, but has generally kept his personal life private.
He stars in The Magic Faraway Tree alongside Claire Foy. The film follows a family who leave city life behind and discover an enchanted tree in the countryside, with its story focusing on imagination, nature and the pressures of modern technology.
