Masked gunmen fired 10 shots at a family home in Moorebank, Sydney’s south-west, after setting fire to a car in the driveway while a woman and seven children were inside.
The attack happened shortly before 2.30am on Saturday at the property on Shoreline Road. The children, aged between three and 10, and the 32-year-old woman were unharmed.
Police said a group of masked men arrived outside the house and were heard saying: “You want to be a man? Welcome to a man’s world,” before opening fire.
A neighbour reportedly challenged the attackers as they covered the family’s Toyota in accelerant. “What are you doing?” the resident called out as the vehicle quickly caught fire.
Moorebank home targeted after apparent mistaken attack
The incident came a day after another family’s Toyota RAV4, parked a few doors away, was torched. The victims said they had returned home to find “just a shell of a car”.
“We can see now that it’s probably not us that are after,” they said.
The masked group is understood to have returned the following night to target the Moorebank home. The woman who lives there is reportedly linked to a luxury car rental business.
Acting Superintendent Mathew Newton, from Liverpool City Police Area Command, said a number of males were seen leaving the area in a white vehicle.
Investigators are also examining whether a Mercedes found burning in Bankstown is connected to the attacks.
