An allegedly “aggressive” toilet notice aimed at female staff at ANZ’s global headquarters in Melbourne has triggered an online backlash after accusing workers of leaving mess behind for cleaners to deal with.
The sign, reportedly displayed in a women’s changing room at the bank’s Melbourne premises, claimed that “a few ladies” had experienced “accidents” in the facilities and failed to clean up afterwards.
It said the toilets were cleaned and disinfected each day, but warned that the alleged behaviour was unacceptable for the cleaning team.
“What the cleaning team have to endure is disgusting, shameful and unhygienic,” the notice stated.
The message added: “Some people may have their own ideas about what is acceptable and what is not, but this is a 6-star building and we won’t accept 1-star behaviours.”
It also warned that those responsible could be identified through CCTV positioned outside the changing-room entrances and hourly inspections of the facilities.
“We have CCTV outside the entrances to the changerooms, and with the hourly inspections we are completing, it is easy to determine who the individuals are,” the sign said.
The notice claimed management already had the names of some alleged offenders and threatened to report staff members internally if they were found to have damaged the facilities or behaved inappropriately.
Staff and visitors were urged to report poor behaviour immediately. The sign said alleged offenders could have their memberships cancelled, although it was not clear from the notice what type of membership was being referred to.
It ended with a sarcastic warning: “If using a toilet is something new for you and you need some help, let us know, maybe we can do some training with you.”
The notice was shared on the Instagram story of theaussiecorporate on Thursday, 3 September, alongside the comment: “love how aggressive it is”.
An anonymous message sent to the account by someone claiming to have worked at the building for more than a year alleged there had been “many ghastly incidents” which had “scarred” cleaners.
ANZ was contacted for comment about the sign and the allegations made in it.
