Apple has entered the foldable-phone market with the iPhone Duo, a book-style handset that has attracted both excitement and criticism over its unconventional appearance.
Unveiled on Wednesday, September 9, the device opens to reveal a 7.6-inch inner display, while a 5.4-inch screen can be used when the phone is closed. Apple described it as its first foldable iPhone and the thinnest iPhone it has made when opened.
The iPhone Duo is powered by Apple’s A20 Pro chip and runs a version of iOS 27 adapted for its two-screen design. The software allows users to place two apps side by side, switch between displays as the phone is folded and use the device at different angles for video calls, photography and viewing content.
Apple has also equipped the phone with a dual 48-megapixel camera system and a dual-battery arrangement. The company said its precision hinge and titanium construction were designed to make the handset durable, while a nano-texture finish on the inner display is intended to reduce glare and make the central crease less noticeable.
Despite the technological leap, early reaction to the iPhone Duo has been mixed. Some commentators have criticised the wide, asymmetrical appearance of the handset when closed, with others arguing that the design looks dated beside rival foldable phones already on the market.
Samsung Mobile US joined the online reaction by mocking Apple’s debut, describing the device as “reheating our leftovers” in a post on social media. The remark reflected the broader criticism that Apple has entered a category established by competitors rather than creating an entirely new form factor.
Apple chief executive John Ternus said the device represented “the most transformational change to iPhone since the original”, arguing that its combination of hardware and software would offer a more immersive and productive experience.
Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo are due to open on Friday, October 16, with the handset scheduled to go on sale from Friday, October 23. It will be available in Star White and Night Sky.
