Mikel Arteta has sought to ease concerns over Viktor Gyokeres’ Arsenal future, insisting the Sweden international remains an important part of his plans despite a recent reduction in playing time.
The 28-year-old striker has struggled to secure regular starts in recent weeks, with Kai Havertz increasingly preferred as Arsenal’s central attacking option. That has prompted speculation that Gyokeres could consider leaving north London during the January transfer window.
Mikel Arteta backs Viktor Gyokeres to make his mark
Arteta praised both forwards when discussing his attacking options, while acknowledging that they offer different qualities to the team.
“I love Kai Havertz, I love Viktor Gyökeres a lot,” the Arsenal manager said, in comments reported by Fabrizio Romano.
“He has a very different character to Kai, but he’s someone that you really feel close to.
“He’s a very important player for the team, and he will have his chance.”
Gyokeres joined Arsenal from Sporting CP after establishing himself as one of Europe’s most prolific forwards. He scored 21 goals in all competitions during his first campaign in 2025/26, helping the Gunners compete at the highest level.
His involvement has since decreased as Havertz has taken on a more prominent role, fuelling reports that several European clubs are monitoring his situation ahead of January.
Gyokeres has previously made clear his desire for regular football, but Arteta’s public backing suggests Arsenal remain keen to retain him and expect him to contribute as domestic and European fixtures build up.
