Amadou Onana has agreed a new Aston Villa contract that will keep the Belgium midfielder at Villa Park until June 2031, despite the serious knee injury that is expected to rule him out for much of the season.
The 25-year-old joined Villa from Everton in 2024 and has since become a key part of Unai Emery’s midfield. His existing deal was due to expire in 2029, but the new agreement will add a further two years to his stay in the West Midlands.

Transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri reported on Friday, 4 September, that an agreement had been reached between Onana and Aston Villa. An official announcement from the club is expected to follow.
Onana has made 72 appearances for Villa in all competitions, scoring seven goals, and was an important member of the side that won the Europa League during the 2025-26 campaign.
His contract extension comes as he begins a lengthy recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered while playing for Belgium at the World Cup. Reports in Belgium say the midfielder underwent surgery in Lyon and is unlikely to return until the latter stages of the season, with a comeback in 2027 considered possible.
Villa’s decision represents a significant show of faith in a player they regard as central to their long-term plans. Onana’s physical presence, aerial ability and defensive qualities have made him an influential figure in Emery’s midfield since his arrival from Everton.
The new deal also removes any immediate uncertainty over his future while he completes his rehabilitation. Rather than allowing his injury to affect their commitment, Aston Villa have moved to secure the services of the Belgian international for the peak years of his career.
