Arizona State University has been ranked the most innovative university in the United States for the 12th consecutive year, with its new John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering among the developments highlighted by the institution.
The result comes from the 2027 Best Colleges rankings published by U.S. News & World Report. ASU has held the top position every year since the innovation category was introduced in 2015, placing it ahead of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.
The innovation ranking is based on a survey of college presidents, provosts and admissions deans, who are asked to identify universities making the most significant improvements in areas including teaching, research, technology, facilities and student life.
ASU said the John Shufeldt School of Medicine and Medical Engineering formed part of its latest push to combine healthcare, engineering and technology. The programme is designed to train doctors who can also help develop new medical tools and approaches to patient care.
The school welcomed its first cohort this year. Its 36 students are studying towards both a medical degree and a master’s degree in medical engineering over four years.
Arizona State University was also ranked number one in the country for undergraduate supply-chain management through its W. P. Carey School of Business.
University president Michael Crow said the latest recognition reflected ASU’s efforts to improve education, research and technology at scale as the demands on higher education continue to change.
