Michael Devon Webb has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder of his fiancée, Rachel Wooten, in Highland Township, Michigan. Webb, 23, was convicted of first-degree murder and felony firearm offences after a jury found him responsible for shooting Wooten, the mother of their six-month-old child, in the neck at close range on 15 April 2025. Deputies responding to a 911 call found both Webb and Wooten inside the home. Wooten was pronounced dead at the scene, while Webb had suffered a non-fatal gunshot wound. Webb initially told police that the gun had…

School protests have resumed across France despite the prime minister ordering ministers to produce an action plan addressing students’ demands for increased education funding and improved conditions. High school students have been joined by university students and trade unions, with a large rally expected in Paris on Thursday. Demonstrators have been moving between schools and blocking streets, while university students have erected barricades in solidarity with those in secondary education. The protests began at a high school in a deprived area of Paris on September 21. Tens of thousands of students have since taken part in demonstrations across the country,…
The oil price rose to $108.33 (£80.79) a barrel by 7am Eastern time, according to the Brent benchmark, up $3.59 from the previous morning. Brent crude is now around 42 dollars higher than it was a year ago. It has gained 3.42% since yesterday and 9.25% over the past month, compared with a price of $66.47 a barrel a year earlier. Why the oil price can change sharply Oil prices are driven primarily by the balance between supply and demand, as well as expectations about future production and consumption. Geopolitical developments, decisions by OPEC+, war and concerns about recession can…
Lauren James says England must put their qualifying disappointment behind them and beat Greece in their World Cup play-off double-header if they are to reach next summer’s tournament in Brazil. Sarina Wiegman’s side finished second in Group 3 behind Spain on goal difference, leaving them with a more difficult route to qualification. They will face Greece home and away, with a tie against either Slovakia or Ukraine awaiting them if they progress. “We can’t change what happened and that’s where we are now,” James said. “I think we have to just try to look forward to win these games.” The…
Central Florida is facing another day of heavy rain and thunderstorms, with widespread downpours and localised flooding expected across the Orlando area on Thursday, October 8. The region remains trapped beneath a tropical air mass and a stalled frontal boundary, drawing moisture northwards from Hurricane Isaias in the Gulf of Mexico. Forecasters say rain is likely for much of the day, with the heaviest storms potentially developing south of Orlando during the afternoon and evening. Rainfall chances are close to 90%, while some parts of Central Florida could receive a further 2 to 4in. Repeated downpours are expected to pose…
At least 33 people have been killed and 18 wounded in a Russian bomb attack on Kramatorsk, authorities said, in one of the largest single strikes on Ukraine this year. The blast hit a street in the eastern Ukrainian city where police said two buses were operating. President Volodymyr Zelensky described the location as a bus stop. Images released by Ukraine’s national police showed bodies amid debris and the burnt-out remains of what appeared to be a bus. Vadym Filashkin, the regional governor, accused Russian forces of deliberately targeting civilians. “For them (the Russians), a bus with passengers is an…

Three sisters who drowned off Brighton beach ended their lives together after visiting the place where their mother died, an inquest has heard. Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, travelled from their shared home in Uxbridge to Birmingham less than 48 hours before their deaths. They visited their mother’s former home, the lake where she took her life and, it is thought, her grave. The sisters spent about 90 minutes in Birmingham before taking a taxi back to London in the early hours of May 12. They travelled on to Brighton that evening, arriving at 10.21pm.…
An ICE detention warehouse in Roxbury, New Jersey, appears to have been used to hold migrants despite a court order blocking its conversion into a detention centre, according to accounts from detainees, relatives and witnesses. The facility was among 11 warehouses acquired by the US Department of Homeland Security in early 2026 as part of a plan costing about $1 billion. The proposals provoked protests and legal challenges, and courts in several states halted conversion work while environmental assessments were carried out. However, evidence gathered in New Jersey suggests detainees were taken to the Roxbury site following immigration raids in…
