New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani has faced fierce criticism from Democratic politicians and Jewish organisations after issuing a statement marking three years since Hamas’s attack on Israel while condemning Israel’s conduct in Gaza. Mamdani described 7 October 2023 as a “profoundly painful” day and acknowledged Hamas’s “horrific war crimes”, including the killing of about 1,200 people in Israel and the taking of more than 250 hostages. “We grieve alongside our many friends and neighbors who still carry that unthinkable loss,” he said. But the mayor’s statement then focused extensively on Israel’s military campaign, referring to its “devastating, ongoing genocide…
Three years after the October 7 attacks, the British Jewish community is described as feeling “under siege”, with the trauma of the Hamas assault compounded by fears of growing hostility towards Jews in Britain. The account links the events in southern Israel with the experience of a family who survived Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen before finding safety in the UK. It warns that the country once regarded by Holocaust survivors as a place of tolerance is now viewed with increasing anxiety. The October 7 assault left about 1,200 people dead, after Hamas fighters attacked communities and a music festival in southern…
Andrew and Tristan Tate have asked a US federal judge to grant them bail while they await a decision on their possible extradition to the UK. The brothers filed a petition seeking their immediate release on bond, arguing that prosecutors have not shown they are a flight risk or a danger to the community. Bond has so far not been set pending the court’s decision on whether they should be extradited to Britain to face trial. Their lawyers said the pair had no criminal history in the United States and had complied with release conditions during previous legal proceedings in…

The US Department of Justice said two domains linked to NudeLeaksTeens were taken over after investigators obtained a seizure warrant. French prosecutors separately said three connected websites had been shut down, including NLT and NLTVIDS. Western Australia’s housing completions fell further behind its National Housing Accord target after 4,814 homes were completed in the June quarter, new Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows. The figure was 6.3 per cent lower than in the previous quarter and down 12.9 per cent compared with the same period a year earlier. Total dwelling completions in Western Australia also fell below 20,000 in the last financial year, prompting criticism from opposition housing spokeswoman Sandra Brewer. Brewer described the result as “appalling” amid the housing crisis, saying the state was building far fewer homes despite having a larger population and…
EU-China trade talks have begun in Beijing as European Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic seeks progress on the bloc’s widening trade deficit and Chinese restrictions on rare earth exports. Mr Sefcovic is due to meet China’s commerce minister, Wang Wentao, on Thursday and Friday following months of discussions over a deficit that has exceeded €1 billion a day. The negotiations will also address curbs on exports of rare earths and other critical minerals, as European officials press for commitments that can be presented to EU leaders next week. EU-China trade talks focus on trade imbalance Chinese companies are also increasingly challenging…
An attorney for Gillio Lopes, one of seven former Cornell fraternity members accused in a sexual assault case, has asked a judge to prevent New York Attorney General Letitia James from leading the criminal investigation. Lawyers for Mr Lopes filed a petition seeking to overturn Governor Kathy Hochul’s appointment of Ms James as special prosecutor, or to restrict her personal involvement in the case. The application argues that comments made by Ms James before her appointment created an appearance of bias. On September 28, she wrote on the New York Attorney General’s official social media account that the alleged victim’s…

Flames were visible through the roof when they arrived. The incident was upgraded to a two-alarm response, bringing about 40 firefighters to the scene.
