Iran has proposed a seven-day roadmap to end its conflict with the United States, including a halt to hostilities, the release of frozen Iranian assets and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi outlined the plan to reporters in New York, saying Tehran had sent it to Washington through mediators earlier this week. The proposal seeks to revive the conditions of a memorandum agreed by the two countries in June. Under the plan, hostilities on all fronts, including Gaza and Lebanon, would end within seven days, according to reports. The United States would also lift its…
Allegations about Mary Peltola’s treatment of staff have done little to shift voters in Alaska’s closely fought Senate race, with many supporters and opponents retreating into their partisan camps. Ms Peltola, a Democrat and former congresswoman, is challenging Republican Senator Dan Sullivan in the contest. Republicans have condemned claims that she subjected staff to angry outbursts and offensive language, while Democrats have largely stood by her, arguing that winning the seat matters more than questions about her personal conduct. Some Democratic supporters even suggested the reports could reinforce Ms Peltola’s image as a tough, blue-collar politician in an independent-minded state.…
High energy prices are making it harder for the Bank of England to leave interest rates on hold, Bailey has said. The comments from the Bank’s Bailey highlighted the pressure that elevated energy costs are placing on decisions over whether rates should remain unchanged.
Perth DJ Andrei Mazandarani has died aged 55 after an eight-week battle with gallbladder cancer, prompting an outpouring of tributes from Australia’s music community. Mazandarani, who performed as DJ Andrei Maz, died in hospital in Perth on Monday night. He had been admitted in July with severe abdominal pain. His younger brother Anton said the initial plan was to begin intensive chemotherapy and reduce the tumour to an operable size, but complications led to a rapid deterioration. “It was just brutally quick — from standing up and being fine to bed-ridden in the hospital in excruciating pain,” he said. Mazandarani…
A dispute over stolen motorbikes ended in a fatal shooting in Ipswich after two groups of men confronted one another in a North Booval street, the Brisbane Supreme Court has heard. Carlo Piero Stewart, 31, was shot in the thighs and back during the confrontation on July 27, 2021. Prosecutors allege the gunfire erupted after Stewart arrived at Brayden Alan Wilson-Knight’s home with nine other men to recover unregistered trail bikes which had been sold to Wilson-Knight. Wilson-Knight had armed himself with a .22 calibre handgun before driving to the planned exchange with Tye Joshua Bickle and a 16-year-old boy,…
Dyfed-Powys Police has suffered a cyber attack that disrupted some non-emergency systems and may have exposed information relating to its staff. The force said the incident was identified on September 14 and that an investigation was under way. It said there was no evidence so far that personal data belonging to members of the public had been accessed or compromised. Emergency response services have not been affected, with both 999 and 101 telephone lines continuing to operate. Online and email contact, which were unavailable for a period, have since been restored. Dyfed-Powys Police said it had notified the Information Commissioner’s…
Republican dissent ahead of the US midterm elections is becoming increasingly visible, as candidates and elected officials distance themselves from Donald Trump’s position on Iran, immigration and the cost of living. The divisions are emerging with less than 40 days until voting ends and the party fights to retain its narrow majority in Congress. Control of both the Senate and House of Representatives could be decided by a handful of closely contested races. Mr Trump has urged voters to treat the elections as a referendum on his presidency, despite historically low approval ratings. The latest NPR/PBS News/Marist poll found that…
