Andy Burnham will face MPs for the first time as prime minister on Tuesday as the House of Commons returns from its summer recess.
The Commons will sit from 2.30pm, with Mr Burnham expected to appear at the despatch box as his Government begins its first parliamentary session since he entered Downing Street.
The opening business includes Foreign Office questions, a motion on the Sovereign Grant and a debate on strategic lawsuits against public participation, according to the parliamentary programme.
Mr Burnham’s first major exchanges with MPs are likely to bring renewed scrutiny of his Government’s approach to taxation and its plans for the early release of prisoners.
The prime minister ordered a review of the prisoner release policy in July after criticism of plans intended to ease overcrowding in prisons in England and Wales. The Government has since said certain offenders, including those convicted of rape and serious child sexual offences, will be excluded from the changes.
Mr Burnham is also due to make his first appearance at Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday, when MPs return for a further day of business including the remaining stages of the Representation of the People Bill.
