Michael Carrick believes Kobbie Mainoo can play a major role for Manchester United this season despite the increased competition for places in midfield.
Mainoo returned to the starting line-up for United’s 5-2 Premier League victory over Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on 30 August, producing a composed display as Carrick’s side recovered from their opening-day defeat by Hull City.
The 21-year-old was particularly effective in possession, helping United progress the ball through midfield and allowing captain Bruno Fernandes to operate further forward. He also completed more dribbles than any other player on the pitch and made three tackles, according to Sky Sports’ analysis of the match.
Carrick expects Kobbie Mainoo to keep developing
Carrick has been encouraged not only by Mainoo’s performances but also by his progress away from matchday. The United manager believes the academy graduate is showing greater maturity and personality as he continues to establish himself at senior level.
“Kobbie Mainoo can have another big season. He has come back great, and you can see him growing in personality and maturity,” Carrick said.
“He is still so young, and there is loads to still come from him, which is great.”
Carrick also described Mainoo as “immense” after the Ipswich win, with the midfielder’s contribution helping to underpin United’s comeback after Leif Davis had given the visitors an early lead.
The performance came amid significant changes in United’s midfield. The club have added Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to their options, with Baleba yet to make his debut after joining from Brighton in a deal reported to be worth £70 million.
Baleba is expected to be available within the next fortnight, increasing the competition Mainoo faces. Carrick, however, sees the battle for places as an opportunity to create different combinations rather than a threat to the England midfielder’s development.
“It is about trying to make the most of the combinations,” Carrick said after the victory.
Mainoo offers Manchester United a different midfield option
United’s new arrivals bring qualities that complement one another. Baleba provides physical power and defensive intensity, Tielemans offers range and control in possession, while Santos adds energy to the centre of the pitch.
Mainoo’s particular strength lies in his ability to receive the ball under pressure, evade challenges in tight areas and carry play through the lines. His display against Ipswich suggested he remains a valuable option even with a deeper squad around him.
The challenge now is to reproduce that level consistently. Mainoo has already shown the quality to influence major matches, but regular performances will be essential if he is to become an automatic starter for Manchester United.
With United back in the Champions League, Carrick should have sufficient opportunities to rotate his midfield. For Mainoo, the manager’s public backing provides a clear indication that he remains central to the club’s plans.
