Celtic completed a remarkable burst of transfer activity by bringing in six players in just over 24 hours, but Martin O’Neill has indicated the Scottish Premiership leaders could still do more business before Thursday’s domestic deadline.
The Hoops confirmed four arrivals ahead of their 3-0 victory over Aberdeen, with Danish midfielder Oliver Sørensen and Chelsea striker Shim Mheuka both making their debuts as second-half substitutes.
Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone was named among the substitutes at Celtic Park, while Chelsea left-back Landon Emenalo also joined the club. The 18-year-old is several weeks away from reaching full fitness.
Following the win, Celtic announced the signings of 19-year-old midfielder Joel van den Berg from PSV Eindhoven and Swiss right-back Jordan Lotomba.
Van den Berg has agreed a four-year contract, while Lotomba has joined until the end of the season. Both deals were completed before the 11pm UEFA registration deadline on Wednesday.
The late recruitment came after Celtic created additional room in their squad with the permanent departures of Johnny Kenny to Preston and Reo Hatate to Burnley.
However, the club may yet have time to add another player domestically. Celtic have been linked with Torino midfielder Gvidas Gineitis, although no deal had been confirmed before the Scottish Premiership transfer deadline at 5pm on Thursday.
O’Neill welcomed the new arrivals after the win over Aberdeen and stressed that Celtic needed reinforcements following the departures from the club.
“I’m very pleased that they’re in the door. I think that they’ll definitely add something to us,” he said.
“Even if they miss the European deadline, if there is a possibility of getting someone else in, I would definitely want to do that if we can.”
The six new signings follow the earlier summer arrivals of Camilo Duran, Kasper Høgh, Mika Baur and Haissem Hassan.
