Western Australian police allege they found about 3.5g of methylamphetamine hidden inside a McDonald’s Bacon and Egg McMuffin during a traffic stop in Broome.
Broome detectives pulled over a 39-year-old man on Salleh Street, Cable Beach, at about 2.10pm on 20 August. A search of the vehicle led officers to a fast-food bag on the rear floor, between the driver’s and passenger’s seats.
Inside was a cold, partially eaten McMuffin. Police allege a clip-sealed bag containing white powder had been concealed between the bacon and egg.
Footage released by Western Australia Police shows detectives inspecting the sandwich before transferring the contents into an evidence bag.
Senior Constable Ben Lucas said the search was not random. Detectives had been conducting surveillance outside a Kimberley property as part of an alleged drug investigation when they saw a vehicle arrive before the man briefly entered the house and drove away.
Police then stopped the car several streets away. An adult woman who was also in the vehicle was questioned and released, according to PerthNow.
The afternoon discovery also raised suspicions because McDonald’s breakfast items are no longer sold after 10.30am in Australia, meaning the sandwich had already been kept for some time by the time it was found, PerthNow reported.
“We found approximately three-and-a-half grams of methylamphetamine secreted between the bacon and egg,” Senior Constable Lucas said.
The 39-year-old man, who police said was not previously known to them, has been charged with possessing a prohibited drug with intent to sell or supply. He is due to appear before Derby Magistrates Court later in September.
