A 93-year-old man has been arrested after his 79-year-old wife was allegedly stabbed multiple times inside a shopping centre in Sydney’s west.
Police were called to Westpoint Shopping Centre in Blacktown shortly after 10am on Sunday following reports of the attack, which involved a kitchen knife.
The woman is understood to have tried to escape into The Reject Shop while she was being attacked. Shopping centre security staff arrived quickly, and she was taken to Westmead Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.
Her husband was arrested and taken to Blacktown Police Station, where he remains in custody. Investigators are waiting for a translator before they can formally interview him.
Witnesses described seeing police, security staff and forensic officers at the busy shopping centre after the stabbing.
“Terrifying,” one shopper said. “I’m glad I wasn’t here earlier.”
